Hidden Jackson Hole Hikes to Explore Like a Local

Sherry Messina July 28, 2025

When most visitors head to Jackson Hole in summer, they gravitate toward the classic trails around Jenny Lake or Taggart Lake. But for those craving quieter, more immersive hikes with spectacular scenery, here are some of our favorite lesser-known routes.

1. Casper Ridge Loop via Bridger Gondola

Less than 2 miles begining at 9,000 ft, this loop offers sweeping valley views and flower-strewn ridgelines. Ride the Bridger Gondola up, then walk along the ridgeline; it’s a gentle climb with big payoff and minimal foot traffic. The wildflower display and serene elevation make this trail a standout, especially during late summer sessions when the village below grows quieter.

2. Rock Springs Loop with Cody Bowl Extension

Accessible from the top of the Aerial Tram, this 3.5-mile loop takes you through pine forests, alpine meadows, and past dramatic rock formations overlooking Jackson Valley. A short detour into Cody Bowl reveals expansive granite fields and often lingering snow. Wildlife sightings - deer, chipmunks, birds - are common in this quieter alpine.

3. Taggart Lake Loop & Phelps Lake Loop

Escape the crowds with these under-the-radar favorites in the Rockefeller Preserve. Taggart Lake’s 3-mile loop is easy but scenic, winding through forest before opening to Teton reflections—best viewed at sunrise with minimal foot traffic. A bit farther on, the 7-mile Phelps Lake Loop offers sweeping views, peaceful beaches and quiet solitude along the

4. Crater Lake via Old Pass Road

A local favorite near Wilson, this historic trail follows the original Teton Pass route. It climbs steadily through forest and meadows, eventually reaching a small alpine lake surrounded by wildflowers and the occasional wildlife visitor. Late summer hikers can often snack on fresh huckleberries along the way.

Difficulty: Moderate

Whether you’re hitting the trails for a weekend getaway or considering a home base closer to the mountains, Jackson Hole has so much to offer this time of year.
